Town and parish councils

Town and parish councils are the organisations that generally know their local area and community the best, and therefore have a strong influence over reducing emissions locally.

Friends of the Earth have created a comprehensive list of 20 actions town and parish councils can take on the climate and nature emergency. This includes being a force for good, by encouraging and promoting local action groups, demonstrating leadership through your own practical actions, and learning to use your powers wisely.

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) have lots of useful information about climate change, including publications on what local councils can do, and case studies showing examples of best practice. Further links and advice are available for several topics, including tree planting, electric vehicle charging points, funding, how to declare a climate emergency, adapting to climate change and many more.
