Tree success in Wyre
Wyre council set a target to plant 25,000 trees by 2025. We are currently 77% of the way to achieving this, thanks to the help of our amazing volunteers. The tree giveaway is not included within these figures and is a separate event.
The council works in partnership with other organisations such as the Wyre Rivers Trust to plant trees on private land to be used as natural flood management solutions, stabilising riverbanks, reducing bank erosion and slowing the flow of flood water.
Wyre council has limited land available for tree planting, that’s why we need your help to plant trees in places we can’t reach, further boosting levels biodiversity (the variety of life) and flood protection in Wyre.
Future tree projects in Wyre
This year, in collaboration with the Lancashire County Council Treescapes team, we will be welcoming two 'Miyawaki Forests'. These are miniature, fast-growing forests which provide multiple benefits including: increased carbon sequestration (storing carbon in the soil), improved biodiversity and health and wellbeing benefits. These forests need substantial maintenance in its early stages, however after a certain amount of time they will begin to look after themselves.
In addition to these two tiny forests, new trees will be planted at:
- King Georges Playing Field, Fleetwood
- Preesall cemetry, Preesall
- The Avenue, Poulton-le-Fylde
- The Civic Centre playing fields, Poulton-le-Fylde
- Memorial Park, Fleetwood
