Schools programme

Three children in a park posing with their bicycles.

Wyre Council has commissioned Fleetwood Town FC Community Trust to provide the Active Travel Primary School Programme. This is split between 2 projects:

  • Scootsafe, a 2-hour programme working with Year 3 and 4 children to teach children about how to ride Scooters safely.
The first hour includes how to share the pavements with other users, a basic L Safety check of the Scooter, Equipment and Clothing to wear, Helmet checks, and more useful tips and information whilst working through the booklet!
The second hour is a practical session on the playground, learning how to use the Scooter safely and develop new skills to ensure they have fun when riding!
  • Tots on Tyres, a 10-week programme working with children in Reception and Year 1 to develop children’s balance and cycling skills at an early age.
The first stages of the programme utilise balance bikes, this allows the children to develop their balance and equilibrium which are essential for riding, it also helps increase pushing power in the legs which is beneficial when progressing.
The second stage of the programme moves into Pedal Bikes. This gives the children the opportunity to use their improved balancing skills and attempt to use the pedals with the assistance of the staff. Over time the children become more confident to keep feet off the ground and rotate the pedals. We also include various challenges and games to make sure all involved have fun!
