Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween!

Various pumpkins

Join Wyre Council this October half term across the borough for the free Pumpkin Roadshow! Carve your own spooky pumpkins and bake pumpkin pie or pumpkin soup!

What's scarier than witches, ghosts and ghouls at Halloween? How about the 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkin that ends up in the bin each year. That's the same weight as 1,500 double decker buses!

It isn’t just pumpkins that are wasted each year, UK households’ waste 7 million tonnes of food every year5 million of which is edible.

We’re not talking egg shells, or bones from your chicken. We mean the last few bites from your plate that you couldn’t quite manage, or your bread crusts, or potato peelings – all stuff which could have been transformed into something delicious.

Saving food means saving money too and is good for the environment and it helps slow down global warming. If global food waste were a county, it would be the largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the USA.

By using up every edible bit of food, you’re doing your bit to look after the environment.

That’s why Wyre Council is hosting the Pumpkin Roadshow across the borough to squash the habit and show you how the pumpkin is a fruit of the season and not just for decoration.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces, commented: “Food waste is a huge contributor to global warming and as part of our climate change action, we’re encouraging residents to use up their food scraps.

“We believe that every person has a part to play in reducing food waste and looking after the planet. The time is now, and the answer is simple: love food, hate waste.”

There will be pumpkin carvings as well as demonstrations on how you can transform your pumpkin guts into delicious food for the whole family.

The events will be taking place during October half term on the following dates:

Monday 21 Oct – Preesall Playing Fields, Sandy Lane 10am - 2pm

Friday 25 Oct – Poulton town centre 10am – 2pm
