Wyre Council is taking huge strides in their ambitions to become net zero carbon by 2050.
The council has introduced a set of electric vans to its fleet of vehicles as well as part electric powered refuse and recycling trucks with electric lifts.
The new set of electric vehicles will be taking to the streets of Wyre and used by the council’s environmental team as they tackle environmental crimes and to help keep Wyre cleaner and greener.
As well as the new vans, the council last year introduced a new fleet of refuse and recycling vehicles part – powered by electricity. They have electric bin lifts, which use less diesel than hydraulic lifts and are much quieter for residents and much better for the environment.
This is just part of the new actions agreed by the council’s cabinet earlier this year to tackle climate change and to reach their goal of becoming net zero carbon by 2050.
Electric charging points are also being installed in Wyre’s car parks, with two charging points already in place at Cleveleys Rough Lea car park and further points will be installed in six locations across the borough.
Councillor David Henderson, Leader of Wyre Council commented, “We are already making great progress in tackling climate change in the borough and I can’t wait to see our new vehicles hit the streets of Wyre.
“We still have many actions to take to reach our goal of net-zero carbon by 2050, but this is a fantastic start.”
Wyre’s recycling rates for 2019/20 have been released and are heading in the right direction, with an increase in recycling in the borough of 3.5%, the biggest increase in Lancashire along with South Ribble. In the last year, the borough has also seen on average a 30% increase in glass, cans and plastics being recycled.
Councillor Henderson continued, “An increase in our recycling rates is fantastic news and I thank our residents for their commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
“However, there is always more than we can do as we still find a lot of recyclable items in grey bins which are sadly going to landfill.
“As we continue to stay at home, please remember to recycle as much as possible, or even better consider what you buy; making choices to purchase products without unnecessary packaging and stop wasting food.”
