The Data Protection Act 2018 is the UK's implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The EU’s GDPR legislation, which came into force on the 25 May 2018, brought in stricter standards than the old Data Protection Act 1998. It covers when and how organisations can contact people or process and store their data.
It also allows the Information Commissioner’s Office to hand out fines of up to 17 million pounds or 4% of global turnover on organisations that breach the rules.
