The left over portion of our carbon footprint are from our general activities like shopping (non-food), leisure and recreation water use, the services we buy and more.

What can you do?

  • Recycling - when recycling, flip over the object and on the bottom you should see a triangle with a number inside: numbers 5, 2, or 1 should be rinsed and recycled as normal; number 4 should be recycled at the supermarket; numbers 6, 7 and a variety of other waste products can be recycled at your local Terracycle or electricals drop off points. Learn more about recycling in Wyre.
  • Clothing - avoid buying fast fashion clothes, which are often poor quality and designed to be worn a few times before being thrown away. Not only are factory conditions inhumane, but it uses large volumes of water, out of season stock is often burned or sent to landfill, and synthetic fibres release microplastics into our water systems. Avoid fast fashion by supporting local charity shops, buy second-hand using a range of apps, or invest in quality items that will last.
  • Banking - are you investing into fossil fuels without knowing? Visit Bank Green to find out and switch to a more sustainable bank.
  • Pensions - greening your pension is one of the most powerful things you can do to significantly cut your carbon footprint, learn more from Make My Money Matter and ask your provider to go green.
  • In your garden - make sure your garden is a haven for wildlife by following these simple tips, such as providing a water source, avoiding the use of pesticides and chemicals that can harm insects and other native species, leaving wildflowers and wild areas for pollinators, and choosing sustainable peat-free compost to protect our local peatlands.
  • Use your local library - make the most of your local library by borrowing either a physical book, or taking advantage of thousands of free digital eBooks available with a library card.
  • Volunteer - in Wyre we have over 600 outdoor events and activities for everyone to get involved in, ranging from gardening clubs, conservation management days, walks, wildlife surveys and more.
  • Make a pledge - after learning more about climate change, make a pledge to reduce your impact and encourage others to do the same! Visit We are Do Nation for a list of pledges and tips to help stick to them.
  • Tell others - talking about climate change is one of the biggest actions you can take. This helps to normalise climate actions, and show others they are not alone. More than 80% of the UK are worried about climate change, so keep the conversation going and encourage those in power to make positive changes.
