Cemetery rules and regulations

As set out under the Local Government Act 1972 and the Local Authorities Cemeteries Order 1977.

This order provides that no person shall:

  • Wilfully create any disturbance in the cemetery
  • Commit any nuisance in a cemetery
  • Wilfully interfere with any burial taking place
  • Wilfully interfere with any grave or vault, any tombstone or memorial, or any flowers or plants on any such matter
  • Play at any game or sport in a cemetery, or
  • Enter or remain in a cemetery at any hour when it is closed to the public unless being a person so authorised by the authority.

Rules and regulations

  • Plans and Registers can be inspected upon arrangement with the cemetery office.
  • It is illegal for an interment to take place without the permission from the cemetery office and completion of necessary legal paperwork.
  • The exclusive right to burial in a grave within wyre is for a period no less than 50 years.
  • Please be aware that dogs are permitted on a lead.
  • Children under 12yrs must be accompanied by an adult for their safety.
  • Wyre cemeteries are lawned areas and no kerbings/edgings of iron, plastic, wood or stonework are permitted. 
  • The council will undertake the turfing, seeding and maintenance of the lawn areas.
  • Vehicles and their contents are left in the grounds at the owners risk.
  • For safety of visitors and staff keep vehicles to 5mph
  • It has been approved that families if wish are permitted to plant seasonal plants within the space immediately in front of the headstone to a maximum of 15” (38cm).
