Loneliness can affect anyone, of any age, gender or background, at any time. Research has shown that loneliness increases the likelihood of early mortality and poor physical health, in addition to putting individuals at greater risk of anxiety and depression.
We’re taking action to help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation across the Fylde coast. In partnership with Fylde Council, Wyre Council is delivering a new befriending service, aiming to recruit volunteers who are able and willing to offer support and spend time with lonely and isolated residents. Befriending volunteers will be able to offer companionship to those most in need in our communities.
Volunteers can assist individuals with practical tasks, such as helping with shopping. They can also help someone to improve their health and wellbeing, by accompanying them on a walk or to a community group or activity. There will be the opportunity to talk over the phone or meet up in person, each offering meaningful connection. Something as simple as getting together for a brew and a chat can make a significant difference and brighten the day of someone who is socially isolated.
